One in three refurbishment projects is putting site workers’ lives at risk, according to the Health and Safety Executive.

In 1500 inspections, enforcement action was necessary on 426 occasions in only two months, with 244 sites being shut down immediately.

“We stopped work on over 200 inspections because we felt there was a real possibility that life would be lost or ruined through serious injury,” said Williams, HSE’s head of construction. “It is completely unacceptable that so many lives have been put at risk. Our inspectors were appalled at the apparent willingness to ignore basic safety precautions.”

The HSE said its rolling inspection programme would continue and harsh action would be taken against those who flouted the law.
