The HSE has issued guidance on the use of tower cranes, following the collapse of a 50m BPR 222 tower crane on a Barratt site in Battersea in October, and the deaths of two men.

Later in the same month, HSE issued a prohibition notice on a Sir Robert McAlpine site in the City of London, banning it from using all seven tower cranes on site, after the jib

of a Potain MR220 luffing crane fell and was left dangling.

Here’s a summary:

  • Workers erecting and dismantling must be competent.
  • Written procedures should be available on site.
  • Independent and impartial person should inspect the crane after erection.
  • Crane operator should inspect before each shift.
  • Crane operator should inspect in-service weekly and keep record.
  • Establish and use maintenance system.
Plan and supervise lifting operations properly.
