The shortlisted design for the Brookes Road estate in east London (21 November, page 7) reminds me of a 1960s council estate in my constituency, Birmingham Selly Oak. It, too, won an award, but today’s illustration would have to include the overflowing rubbish, graffiti and unauthorised car repair businesses. Do we never learn from the mistakes of the past?
