Housing Minister Keith Hill has given his backing to plans to build 30,000 more homes in the Thames Gateway's than outlined in the Communities Plan.
Last Wednesday, at a meeting of the Thames Gateway London Partnership Board, chaired by Hill and London mayor Ken Livingstone, the minister said greater numbers could make the project more successful.

Tony McBrearty, chief executive of the Thames Gateway London Partnership, said it was the first time the government had indicated it was prepared to look at higher numbers. "Now it's understanding what we say when we call for high-density, sustainable communities," he said. "It's our job to come back with compelling plans for it."

However, Hill gave no final approval. He said increases would have "investment consequences". The Communities Plan allows for 59,000 homes in the Gateway's London area but the TGLP wants 90,000 (HT 17 October, page 9).
