Moving cameras that visibly home in on potential suspects who know they are being watched are proving an effective deterrent to crime and anti-social behaviour.

The cameras from Viseum UK have been monitoring high rise estates in Luton throughout this year and community awareness of their effectiveness has had a deterrent effect.

"Local residents have stated that since installation of the new system there has been a noticeable reduction in the area's crime," says the company. The "Virtual Operator" 24-hour system for Luton Borough Council uses multiple cameras that see and record all around them in line of sight. Moving ptz cameras are automatically controlled to capture close-up evidence of crime.

The system can detect incidents too far away for the naked eye to recognise and capture evidence that would otherwise be missed. The system is said to provide the same functions from a single point as several dispersed fully manned cameras. Police have been using the images for intelligence gathering and investigating crime and anti-social behaviour. Since the system was installed it has recorded evidence of four serious crimes and a series of anti-social incidents that resulted in action against the perpetrators.

• COE Group has completed a major upgrade of the Bradford City Centre analogue CCTV system using X-net and network recording systems. The IP-based digital video transmission network and digital recording solution has several hundred cameras in Bradford and surrounding areas. By re-using the analogue technology and integrating the analogue and digital systems, users are able to search crime scenes and stored video more efficiently.
