A site audit conducted by the ECA/HVCA Joint Major Contractors’ Group (JMCG) has revealed that over 84% of those questioned were able to produce evidence of membership of industry registration schemes.

The exercise, involving 13 000 site-based individuals, provided proof of take-up of the sector’s two major registration schemes – the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme and the mechanical sector’s Engineering Services Skillcard.

The results of the audit were highest among directly employed employees at 89%; agency labour recorded 82% compliance; staff personnel 79%; and subcontractors 77%.

Sir Michael Latham, chair of the JMCG, said: “The results of the audit demonstrate the commitment of JMCG members to the highest levels of workforce competence and health and safety awareness on their sites.”

While JMCG member companies are satisfied with these initial results, they have commissioned a further study into improving cardholding levels. They have also committed to a future programme of six-monthly audits, the first of which will take place in October.
