Two incidents that have featured heavily in media reports have highlighted the need for CCTV surveillance of firms, security companies say.
The Bunsfield petroleum fire disaster had a hidden message for the management of large organisations, according to asset protection specialists Reflex. Its digital CCTV surveillance systems at Hemel Hempstead could eventually identify the cause of the fire.
"Bunsfield provides a timely reminder of the added value to management of deploying integrated asset protection technologies," said Reflex group managing director John Pye.
"CCTV is still frowned upon by many as being a crude anti-crime tool, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
"Organisations like total who operate the Bunsfield site are fast realising that these systems are business critical in so many ways. From a planned and coordinated intrusion strategy, right through to preventing and identifying petty crime, the right combination of integrated technologies can be invaluable to business.
"It may well prove to be the digital CCTV system that led the enquiry to the cause of the disaster. The outcome could have far reaching health and safety implications."
Meanwhile, Bold Communications points to the clear images produced during the raid on the Securitas depot in Kent as a prime example of the effectiveness of remote video surveillance.
"Remote video surveillance and clear image capture are crucial security measures required to monitor and protect business property and assets, and can be instrumental in the investigation and tracking of key scenes, should an incident occur," said Bold's managing director Brian Kelly.
Its Mini-Bold alarm monitoring software is being integrated into the alarm receiving centre of video surveillance specialist P&R Fire and Security Ltd.
This is being done to specifically enable P&R to extend its professional monitoring services over IP, in conjunction with video surveillance over IP.
