Sir – The Security Institute (TSI) has taken a major step forward in its development with the appointment of Di Thomas as general manager (see this month’s Appointments on page 61).

An exciting move which will enable us to devote significant new resources to the Institute’s future development.

At the same time, we are formalising a new strategy for our expansion. In order to realise such a strategy, we are in the process of forming four separate Focus Groups – all of which are ultimately responsible to TSI’s Council. The intention is that these core Focus Groups will measure performance and recommend action across four main areas of Institute activity.

Those areas are membership (growth, validation, benefits, recognition and value), resource management (financial control, output delivery and governance), standard setting (recognition as the leading professional organisation in our field, providing guidance, defining Best Practice and examining future core security management competencies) and innovation (wherein we shall examine partnerships with key policy-making bodies, the movement towards Chartered status, information services and how we might continue to raise TSI’s profile in the coming months and years).

If we are to move forward successfully, we need to be exploiting the talents and experience of our membership at large. Thus we require assistance on each of those Focus Groups.

In a short space of time, The Security Institute has established itself as an organisation of prestige and influence in UK professional security circles. It is now the right time to take our message about professional standards to a wider audience. If you want TSI to grow, and if you would like to give something back to the profession that you follow, please do join us in our strategic planning activities. We need – and desperately want to hear – your ideas.
