The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published two new forms of guidance aimed at combating the rising numbers of injuries caused by poor manual handling.
Almost one-third of industrial injuries are caused by manual handling accidents; an estimated 1·1 million people in the UK suffer from work-related musculoskeletal disorders, many of which are a consequence of poor manual handling.

The publications are: L23 Manual handing: Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (revised) and INDG143 (rev 2) Getting to grips with manual handling: a short guide. Both documents have been thoroughly revised to take into account increased knowledge of the risks and how to avoid them.

Copies of both documents are available from HSE Books. L23 costs £8.95, while INDG143 is free for individual copies. Call HSE Books on 01787 881165 or go to www.hsebooks.co.uk.

m The HSE is prosecuting HBG Construction Southern, formerly Kyle Stewart (1989) over the death of agency labourer Osman Kamara while positioning a concrete lintel in a new electrical substation in Old Broad Street, London.
