Minister for education Ivan Lewis was in Sheffield to launch the UK’s first handheld CCTV monitoring system, used by Sheffield First for Safety to tackle street crime in the city.
Members of the group, including South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield City Council, were piloting the use of the Synergy-Mobile, a new mobile surveillance communications system devised to help reduce crime.

The process involves CCTV operators at the Sheffield Wide Imaging and Switching System’s (SWISS) control room transmitting still images from any of the system’s 150 cameras, via Synectics’ award-winning SynergyPro control interface, directly to officers on the ground – allowing them to track incidents as they take place.

The SynergyMobile system exploits current GPRS network technology to act as the transmission medium. In the event of an incident taking place, operators can choose to relay camera images to any number of mobile handsets, allowing police on the ground to view and track incidents as they unfold.
