Recruiters often say it is hard to find enough good people to fill roles in housing.

This situation has created a “buyers’ market” for skilled housing workers, who can pick and choose the jobs they want. The key to moving ahead is standing out from the crowd, so how can you mark yourself as different to help your career? If you implement these five steps you will very likely be in a different job within 12 months.

  • Choose the right organisation.

Most people fell into housing, but they stay because they enjoy the environment, values, purpose and cause. If you have a strong sense of social responsibility, make the most of it by putting yourself in an organisation that feels the same and will appreciate your stance. All associations aren’t created equal – everyone talks about making a difference to the lives of tenants, but for some it is just talk.

  • Perform better in your role.

Find new ways to be enthusiastic about your work. Keep reminding yourself why you stay in the business and attend meetings with the intention of making a difference and contribute to the debate wherever possible.

  • Be more innovative.

There is a massive lack of innovation skills within the housing industry. Anything you can do to improve your performance in this area will pay you back handsomely. Read widely; keep up to date with what is going on in the housing industry and the world at large; and devote time to coming up with fresh ideas.

  • Demonstrate leadership.
  • If you have any people reporting to you, be the best leader they have ever had.

Really prepare for those one-to-ones, engage them in discussion, respect their views and make them feel you’re there to support them.

    • Improve your presentation skills.

There’s not much point having great ideas if you express them badly. Take any training opportunities to improve your communication skills.
