According to the National Statistics Office 'International Passenger Survey' UK business representatives made more than seven million trips abroad last year. This figure is set to increase as more companies and brands are marketed with a greater regard toward a global strategy. This change in business practice has implications for the Security Director or Manager. Good practice would suggest that prior to any overseas travel a risk assessment should be conducted, and an effective tool to assist in such an assessment is the Control Risks Group 'Outlook 2000'.
Outlook 2000 is the latest edition of the Control Risks Group annual survey of world-wide Political, Security and Reputational or Business risks. Available as a single item, the work consists of two volumes. Firstly, there is the 'Global Risk Forecast' which contains in-depth articles and comment upon broad-ranging current political and security issues. These articles included the subjects of corruption, fraud, rogue states, organised crime and global security.
The second and larger volume is the 'Regional Risk Forecast'. This book contains assessments and forecasts of risk for every state in the world. Each state is given a risk level indicator in relation to both security and political hazards as well as a brief commentary. Obviously, areas of higher risk are covered in the greatest detail with such text including historical notes, recent incidents and projections upon risk. Each of the book's five chapters, covering an approximate continental area, begins with regional overviews and essays upon topics of note. For example, within the Africa chapter there are articles upon regional general security risks (including the Nigerian advance fee fraud scam), areas of conflict, predictions of future hotspots and the applicable maps.
An employee that represents an organisation overseas deserves to have their welfare considered and appraised. This publication, which reads like a professional intelligence summary, is a very appropriate starting point for that process.
