In response to Matt Elmes letter (It's the drink talking, QS News, 24 March), I would like to add my own ‘moans' to his, however, in the building services sector it is even worse.

I managed to do exactly as Elmes explains is needed to get a career going in quantity surveying. I found my own employers, colleges, exam routes and the like, but had even more difficulty when I did finally pass the RICS external exams back in 1996.

I have been trying to find out how to get my membership into the RICS for nearly 10 years following my exams. All I get is ‘oh, you're building services, I am not sure who you need to talk to'.

I now manage my own practice of 16 M&E-biased quantity surveyors and not one of us has managed to gain full membership of RICS yet - but I am getting close.

I completely agree with Elmes - the RICS need to get out there and get QSing on the map and make it sexy!
