GE Consumer and Industrial has announced the proposed closure of its Enfield lighting facility, scheduled for 20 January 2006.

The plant currently employs 213 operatives, making compact fluorescent tubes.

The closure is blamed on the consolidation of the division to its most competitive site. It is subject to consultations with employee representatives, unions and the European Works Council. GE says it will work closely with all parties to identify employment opportunities, should the planned closure take place.

Director of manufacturing Europe, Istvan Salekovics, said: “The proposed closure of the Enfield manufacturing operation will not distract our team from delivering the highest quality products and outstanding service for customers.

“The plant operates in an increasingly competitive global industry and we are under continual pressure to improve all aspects of the operations. Production at the Enfield plant is no longer economically viable.”
