GE Consumer & Industrial’s Leicester lighting manufacturing plant is to close by the end of 2007.

This announcement comes in the face of what the company states as high manufacturing costs, declining volume and the pending discontinuation of a key product made at the facility.

Director of manufacturing, Istvan Salekovics said: “We understand that the actions we are proposing will be very difficult for our workforce to take. The lighting business operates in a highly competitive global industry. It was necessary to review the effectiveness of all European plants and results show that volume at the Leicester plant has continued to fall. The plant is not delivering the results required to remain competitive.”

The Leicester plant makes a wide range of lighting products. The closure, which is subject to consultations with trade union representatives and the European Works Council, will affect 378 employees at the facility.
