Brighton mixed-use project will include wind turbine, plant covered roofs and solar energy plant. Work due to start next Spring

Gardiner & Theobald is working on ambitious plans for a zero carbon mixed-use scheme planned for the centre of Brighton. The firm is working with a team including architect John McAslan & Partners and engineer Arup on the plans, which include 180 homes, offices and a library for the University of Brighton. The client on the project is Cathedral Group.

Green elements on the scheme include a wind turbine, plant covered roofs and a solar energy plant. There will also be rainwater collection, an irrigation network and an organic supermarket.

Work is due to start on the scheme, dubbed Grow Brighton, in March 2007. The complex will be built on a 0.75-acre brownfield site to the east of the city centre and will also house shops, restaurants, a piazza, dance studios and a business incubator.
