Rising fuel costs have been named as a major business expense by 24% of construction company owners and managers, according to research by Bibby Financial Services.

The findings, in an annual transport survey, also cite congestion on the UK’s roads as a major challenge, with some 22% of respondents labelling it as the reason for missing meetings and suffering high levels of staff lateness.

David Robertson, chief executive of Bibby Financial Services, said: “Many small and medium sized firms will suffer from the impact of increases in transport costs, with suppliers and couriers raising their prices to cover extra costs. Owners and managers will be faced with the decision as to whether or not they accept the rising transport costs or offset them to their customers and risk losing business.

“With constant worries such as maintaining targets and coping with red tape, the importance of a reliable and effective transport system can not be underestimated.”
