This week, we go through the keyhole at some of the UK’s most genteel new residences, including a Buckinghamshire country house with timber leaded windows and a rapidly rendered home in Poundbury

Cavity lintels

Cavity lintels

Catnic’s lintels have been specified by Country & Coast Homes of Seaton, Devon, for the development of six large houses in Exeter. Approximately 60 CX Cavity lintels were supplied to support the exterior windows and doors. The project team needed to pay close attention to both the structural and thermal performance of the buildings due to the unique shape and glazed design of the envelopes. Catnic claims that cavity lintels were chosen as they support the specialist architectural features of the development, and for their strength and thermal ability.

Ridge ventilation

Cembrit has launched the continuous vent ridge, a capping solution for pitched roofs. The new ridge weighs 3.24kg, and is 525mm in length. The company claims that the practical dimensions and light weight of the product enable it to be carried up to rooftops with ease, ensuring that installation is a simple process. The continuous vent ridge is available in either blue or black and adheres to all roof ventilation regulations.

Rustic red profiled tiles

Rustic red profiled tiles

Redland has added Rustic Red to two more of its profiled tiles: Grovebury (below) and 50 Double Roman. The Rustic Red tile comprises a through-coloured dark red concrete body to which a random black streaking is applied to give the product a rustic farmhouse look. To enhance the intensity of the colours, the tile is then finished with a clear acrylic coating across all surfaces and edges. The company says the Grovebury and Double Roman range are ideal for new housebuilding projects as the interlocking design means installation can be carried out quickly.

Floor-to-ceiling leaded light windows and doors from Mumford’s Conservation range were chosen for the main building and lounge. French doors were specified for the ground floor accommodation. Mumford & Wood’s duo-tone paint finish was also selected for the project. The company claims its products offer excellent thermal performance.

Thin-joint solution

H&H’s Rå Build method has been used for a housing development at Britannia Crescent, Great Yarmouth. The arc-shaped development consists of 19 three-bedroomed houses. The company claims the thin-joint solution was chosen for its speed of construction and sustainability credentials, as well as being adaptable to any late design changes that need to be made. As part of the Rå Build method, the H&H team worked closely with contractor RG Carter during the 10-month project to provide U-value calculations and on-site thin-joint training.

Movers and Makers

Wienerberger has announced it will be launching a BIM portal on its website. From April, the BIM Lab will be available through www.wienerberger.co.uk. The company claims the portal will give architects and specifiers a greater understanding of how products will function in their projects. Wienerberger will make its BIM models available on products across its wall innovations, landscaping and roofing divisions.

Kingspan Insulation has released updated technical bulletins outlining how its products can be used for achieving credits in the relevant sections of the Code for Sustainable Homes. All Kingspan Insulation products and cavity closers produced at its British manufacturing facilities are now certified BREEAM “very good”. The company claims the new technical information will give specifiers detailed analysis of how its products can be used to achieve Code Level 3.

Kaydee Blinds has achieved the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, covering all environmental aspects of projects, from the working conditions on site through to the long-term environmental impact. As Kaydee carries out a lot of installations on site, it has also undergone the procedures necessary to achieve the ISO OHSAS 18001 occupational health and safety standard.

Jablite is in the running for a £50m development grant to bring an insulation product to the market. The as-yet-unnamed product is made from a derivation of expanded polystyrene and can be manufactured to a 1mm thickness with a breaking strength 1,000 times greater than clingfilm. The company claims the unique material can be easily rolled onto internal walls, where it is invisible. The material is expected to deliver thermal conductivity levels of 0.0001W/m2K.
