Francis says: “The sketch is of Sansovino’s Library in St Mark’s Square,Venice. I drew this because I enjoyed the play of light across the surface of the facade. The sharp shadows generated by the geometry of the architecture contracts with the fragmented pockets of light and shade made by the sculpture. This effect looks particularly beautiful with the morning sun hitting the elevation from the top left as though it was a Beaux Arts rendering.”
