This week’s #buildingdoodle sketch is by Martin Douglas, associate director of Bristol-based Pad Design (pad-design.com). It is the Basilica da Estrela in Lisbon.
Douglas says: “The sketch was done some years ago while on a study trip to Lisbon with UWE as part of my masters in urban design.” He adds: “Built in white limestone in a Rococo style, it is considered one of the finest churches in Portugal. Guide books tell the sad story of its construction in the 18th century. Founded by Queen Mary I of Portugal to mark the birth of her son José in 1761, the basilica was completed in 1790 - two years after his death from smallpox.” You can see more of Douglas’ sketch on his Instagram page (@douglasdoodles).
