Mace
Mace shoots high. Against the industry average customer satisfaction figure of 74%, it went for 80% last year – and achieved 79%. This year, it is aiming for 85%. For a firm that is already a leader in its field, Mace has had a great year, with UK operating profit up 31% and steady growth in all its areas of business. But project managers are only as good as their last project, and Mace's submission was a corker: a new HQ for global pharmaceuticals corporation GlaxoSmithKline. This project was delivered early and under budget. Mace's fistful of Movement for Innovation demonstration projects for high-profile clients such as the Greater London Authority and BAA are just part of its commitment to being the best, as is its involvement in the Construction Best Practice Programme. A class act.
SECOND
Heery International
Heery is a fine example of an enlightened construction firm. It employs the number of graduates some firms can only dream of – and it keeps them, too. But that's not good enough for a firm committed to treating its people well, and that's why it is introducing more flexible working hours and a new approach to holidays. Heery is continuing to expand – staff numbers have been rising for nine years – and, with projects like the £50m Sun Microsystems office consolidation under its belt, it is unlikely to be stopping any time soon.
THIRD
Bovis Lend Lease
Bovis Lend Lease has global aspirations and 2001 was its year, with overseas construction turnover up 73%, crossing the £3bn mark. But it was Bovis' attention to detail on a project closer to home that showed the firm in its best light. The £31m refurbishment of the British Galleries at the grade I-listed Victoria & Albert Museum in London was always going to be exacting, but Bovis excelled at its execution. As well as finishing the project on time and to budget, it won a glowing testimonial from the client.
A firm that genuinely adds value for its customers. The project they submitted was very impressive
