Are you ready? National Construction Week, such a risible non-event in October 1997, has a fresh start on Monday. This time, the week will last five days, not 10 (ouch) – and there’s stacks of sponsorship.

After all the television exposés on cowboy builders and the millennium project delays, we need some light relief. So, three cheers to those organising office tours, or kids’ painting competitions. It will take more than five days to polish up construction’s tarnished image. But the first step is for the industry to feel better about itself. So, thanks for National Construction Week, and thanks for Bob the Builder – future hero to the under-fives.
