An extensive green roof system from Blackdown Horticultural Consultants has been installed at the Centre for Disability Studies at Rochford in Essex.
Designed by Simmonds Mills Architects, the £1.3m facility has 720m2 of Blackdown’s Extensive Nature Mat Green Roof System, which was specified as part of a sustainable building
package designed to meet the rigorous Association for Environment Conscious Building’s CarbonLite Step2, which is based on the German Passivhaus standard.
The system was installed on five individual roofs with pitches varying from 0º to 30º. Nature Mat is grown exclusively by Blackdown at its Somerset facility and is claimed to offer 95% “instant” green coverage on installation, and requires minimal maintenance.
