BIM survey 2019: What's the problem?

NBS Bim survey 2019

As the government’s push for BIM eases and client expectations evolve, the latest NBS survey shows adoption is tailing off a little. So what is holding back those final few – and have the rest of us already moved on?

For the first time in four years, BIM uptake has not gone up, according to an annual survey by NBS, but industry experts are confident this does not take away from the positive direction that construction is moving in when it comes to digitisation.

When the 988 respondents (see Methodology, below) to the ninth survey by the construction technology platform were asked if they had adopted BIM, 73% said yes, compared with 74% last year – the last time that number fell was in 2015. However, this is a huge improvement since 2010, when NBS first ran the survey and adoption stood at just 13%. “The fact that practically all organisations say they will be using BIM within five years is a huge change – we must take time to reflect on the journey and celebrate the success so far,” says Stephen Hamil, innovation director at NBS.
