This is a strikingly contemporary redevelopment of the London Borough of Southwark’s Elmington Estate in Peckham, London. A mix of new affordable homes and private properties, houses are arranged in traditional street terraces and courtyards but there are also corner apartment blocks. The architects chose brick for its durability and low maintenance and to harmonise with the Victorian neighbourhood. Red Ibstock facing bricks major on street and rear elevations, and green glazed bricks are used for decorative coursing and stack-bonded panels. Timber cladding and render complete the line-up. The judges admired the way brick constitutes the heart of this colourful, vibrant, bold and contemporary scheme. They also commented on the numerous interesting brick details, particularly the use of stack bonding and decorative formations to provide articulation to the brickwork. The estate is a perfect example of brick holding its own against some of the fashionable materials of the day.
