Access control

The Port of Tyne boasts 6.2 hectares of undercover warehouse storage space which is connected to a management system such that all pallet movements are tracked by the use of bar codes and dedicated radio data terminals.

The main challenge, then, is to maintain and control security in a multi-user environment while allowing operations to run smoothly and quickly.

For several years, Bewator’s stand-alone access control systems have been used at each warehouse in isolation, enabling authorised personnel to gain access to secure areas via a combination of hand-held cards and vehicle-mounted tags. Now, the security system is migrating towards an Entro PC-based set-up providing centralised monitoring and control of all access points across the entire complex.

Entro can cater for up to 12,000 users. Its installation has begun in Warehouse 21, a 17,000 square metre building. It currently has a total of 15 access points and 100 users.

Details of all current warehouse users have been entered into Entro, and those users allocated access rights according to their designated security clearance levels.
