Guidance for the jointing of cables used in fire detection and fire alarm systems can be found in BS 5839-1:2002. The standard identifies two classes of cable – standard fire resisting cables satisfying clause 26·2d and enhanced fire resisting cables that meet clause 26·2e.

It also recommends that cables should be installed without external joints wherever practicable. Where this is not possible, terminals used to joint cables should be constructed of materials that will withstand a similar temperature and duration to that of the cable.

The ECA recommends that, if required, cables should be terminated in an appropriately sized, fire resistant, steel box. The box should then be coloured red and clearly marked ‘fire alarm’.
