Rewarding the security industry's best operatives was the main focus of the British Security Industry Association's 2006 Annual Luncheon, held at London's Grosvenor House Hotel on Wednesday 5 July.

The occasion afforded the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to some of the industry's finest security officers through the presentation of the national BSIA Security Officer Awards, sponsored once again by Camberford Law plc and presented by Sir Ronnie Flanagan (Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary).

The 2006 winners amply demonstrate the diversity of skills and expertise the industry now has to offer, with individual officers and teams being nominated under the categories of Service To The Customer, Outstanding Act, Best Newcomer, Best Use of Technology and Best Team.

Breadth of achievement

The BSIA's chief executive David Dickinson commented: "The breadth of achievements demonstrated by the award winners reflects the varied role that our industry plays in both the business world and public life. Now that the security guarding sector is being licensed, the professionalism of the industry - and the public's confidence in its ability - will surely go from strength to strength.

"Security officers make a positive difference to ordinary lives on a daily basis. It is only right that we recognise such a contribution to the well-being of society."

Rewarding the industry's new blood

The BSIA and its constituent members have always been fully aware that investing in the industry's new blood will reap dividends in the years to come. This sentiment is demonstrated through the BSIA Apprentice Installer Awards (sponsored by Dedicated Micros), which recognise the achievements and enthusiasm of apprentice installers from BSIA member companies and colleges in the UK.

The 2006 winners are Steven Duncan from Initial Fire and Security (the overall winner), Vincent Kirley from ADT Fire and Security plc and Jak Clark of Classic Security Solutions.

Saluting our heroes in the Capital

On 7 July 2005, not only were the emergency services key to the rescue of thousands of people caught up in the aftermath of the horrific London suicide bombings, but so too were the security officers on hand to play their part in the rescue mission.

The BSIA has recognised the important role those officers had to play by bestowing a number of Special Awards for Outstanding Service (sponsored by the Security Industry Authority). Ken Knight - commissioner of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority - presented the Special Awards at the Association's Annual Luncheon. n
