Following the collapse of a crane in Liverpool, which killed a worker and seriously injured the driver, the HSE has served a prohibition notice on Falcon Crane Hire.

The notice requires the firm to take all tower cranes out of service until they have been independently checked. Around 180 sites have been affected.

The latest tragedy occurred on 15 January when a Jaso J138PA luffing jib crane on a David McLean site collapsed.

It is the second involving a Falcon crane: two people were killed in Battersea, London, in September last year when a tower crane on a Barratt site collapsed.

Following the Liverpool incident, the HSE has reissued a safety alert first published in October. It can be viewed at www.hse.gov.uk/construction/pdf/towercranes.pdf.
