Buro Happold has fitted managed lighting systems from Ex-Or throughout the newly built £55 million Health and Safety Executive headquarters in Bootle, Merseyside.

The detectors and controllers were pre-installed off site, along with the light fittings, into suspended lighting and acoustic rafts.

Ex-Or's scene-setting and dimming system, SceneSelect II, operates in the main conference and training area. It allows users to recall, at the touch of a button, pre-set lighting scenes customised to suit the requirements of specific activities.

The lighting in all open-plan areas and cellular offices within the 23 000 m2 four-storey building is controlled by the Ex-Or MLS Digital Managed Lighting System, which ensures lights remain on only when needed and automatically delivers optimum levels.

An important part of the client’s brief was to provide maximum energy efficiency, so the building is also designed to utilise natural light to the full, with its three blocks surrounding a central atrium.
