Construction products will have to be cleaner and greener under proposals from the European Union to help tackle climate change and security of energy supply.

The proposals are contained in a consultation called the EU’s Action Plan on Sustainable Industrial Policy and on Sustainable Consumption and Production. The plan has been launched to help the EU move towards a low carbon economy by changing current consumption patterns.

The plan will focus on five key challenges:

  • stimulating the development and commercialisation of low carbon, energy and resource efficient technologies, products and services
  • creating a dynamic internal market for better performing products
  • cleaner and more efficient production
  • persuading consumers to opt for sustainable products
  • faster uptake of environmental technologies to give “first mover” advantage

Interested parties are invited to participate in the online consultation, which finishes on 23 September 2007.
