I find, while filling out Elmhurst’s EPC training application form, that my mechanical engineering degree certificate, chartered engineer certificate and CIBSE membership are not enough.

It wants a detailed employment history and a detailed CPD attendance history. Respectable as Elmhurst may be, it is not a government body but a private company. It provides no guarantees regarding the Data Protection Act, therefore the private personal information it requires has no legal protection.

For my SBEM accreditation and LCC registration my qualifications were sufficient – and they have data protection. So to assess the energy status of complex M&E systems and thermal envelopes in commercial and public buildings requires fewer checks than assessing the odd extract fan, trickle vent, a few panel radiators and an old combi boiler in a building with, at best, low-E glass. This is daft.
