Thirty-five organisations concerned with securing clean, sustainable energy supplies have joined forces to issue a joint statement in response to the Government's Energy Review. The manifesto, spearheaded by the Renewable Energy Association and environmental think-tank Green Alliance, outlines the priorities and specific policy actions that should come out of the Energy Review.

Among the measures it calls for are that the government should uphold the objectives and targets set out in its 2003 Energy White Paper: the development of a long-term policy framework to promote business investment; to minimise the energy gap before trying to fill it; to focus on sustainable heat as well as electricity and to identify a single body responsible for achieving sustainable energy targets.

According to Philip Wolfe, chief executive of the Renewable Energy Association, "This is the last chance for government to bring forward a sustained package of measures to deliver the objectives set out in 2003."

The public consultation to the Energy Review closed on 14 April. Over the coming months, the government will analyse the responses and use them to shape its decisions to determine energy strategy up to the middle of the 21st century. A report will be compiled for the Prime Minister by the summer.
