Social landlords should join forces to create job opportunities in areas hit by skills shortages as part of an efficiency agenda, says procurement group Fusion 21.
Dave Neilson, managing director of Fusion 21, said: “There’s more to Fusion 21 than just being a bulk-buying consortium. You can’t just throw volume at the market in order to achieve efficiency. We’ve learned that the trick is to use the opportunity to continue winning.”
Neilson, who was scheduled to speak at the 2005 Housing Today Efficiency Conference in London yesterday, added that Fusion 21 had created 320 training places and 205 jobs, including construction workers, window fitters, kitchen fitters, bathroom fitters and plumbers, in an effort to ensure long-term efficiency.
He says: “Associations that get together should do more than just doing a deal. We do training to combat the skill shortage in areas like construction. We want to tackle the cause [of the problem] rather than the symptom.”
