The ECA has started work on compiling core health and safety criteria for measuring contractors' capabilities.
The intention is to work with clients and contractors to try and converge various pre-qualification schemes towards the core criteria.

According to ECA health and safety advisor Paul Reeve: "We completely recognise the need for clients to ensure they are using safe firms, but contractors, of all sizes, are having to sign up with several health and safety assessment schemes just to tender.

"Our members expect to have to demonstrate the right standard of health and safety competence. However, this is not helped by having to repeatedly spend time and money on meeting the needs of different pre-qualification schemes."

Initially, the ECA is referring to safety criteria issued by the Major Contractors' Group, though it is reviewing other schemes, looking for common requirements.
