Firm oversees 19-week cleaning and repairs - as well as pigeon-proofing - to Trafalgar Square monument
EC Harris played a key role in the new look Nelson's Column, which was revealed to the world yesterday. The firm was project manager on the 19-week scheme, which included cleaning, repointing and stone repairs to the statue and colum. The restoration also included pigeon proofing minor areas of the monument.
The firm's team, led by senior building surveyor Simon Clark, pulled together the tender list for the work, which was awarded to David Ball Restoration. In total six miles of scaffolding tube was used to create the scaffold structure around the column.
The cost of the restoration was met through a partnership between London mayor Ken Livingstone and insurance firm Zurich. Restoration work on the column previously took place in 1968 and 1986. The column was originally completed in 1843 based on an initial design created by John Nash produced in 1812.
