12:50PM Cost consultant wins contract for first phase of Lambeth school refurbishment scheme

Construction cost consultant Dobson White Boulcott has been appointed QS on the first phase of the Elmcourt Programme that includes the construction of two new special schools and a pupil referral unit.

Valued at £22.5m, the first phase will involve demolishing two existing schools and the refurbishment of a third to be used as an interim school until the second phase is completed in September 2009 which will involve building Elm Green secondary school.

DWB has been appointed to final account on the enabling works valued at £700,000 for phase one and the temporary school valued at £1.5m.

Associate at DWB Wee Siew said: “Designed by architects Marks Barfield, Ellis Williams and JM Architects, the project has evolved through close consultation with the teachers, parents, governors and children who will come into contact with the new building.”

Part of the Building Schools for the Future initiative within the London Borough of Lambeth, the programme aims to introduce purpose built schools for children with severe learning difficulties, autism and behavioural problems.

This also means the initiative must incorporate a means to ensure that at least 10% of all power consumption is from a sustainable source. DWB has therefore costed in a revolutionary new wind turbine in one school, a bio mass boiler in another, and a mixture of solar panels and smaller wind turbines in the third.

Siew added: “The project fits well with DWB’s experience working with education clients and public authorities.”
