A Ganz digital video recorder has survived the attentions of bank robbers in South Africa, despite their attempts to put the machine out of action in a bid to destroy surveillance footage of the incident.

The gang of robbers broke into the bank after office hours, and once inside, set about smashing the internal surveillance cameras, hitting them with sticks to smash their lenses. The gang then moved into the bank's 'back office' area, intent on disabling the DVR. The unit was housed in a 19-inch rack and the assailants smashed the front glass of the cabinet before trying to destroy the DVR using a crowbar. The front of the machine was damaged in the process, but it still continued to record activity within the branch, and as a result, investigators were able to extract all the video material they required in tracking down the perpetrators.
