The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) gave consent for four small-scale combined heat and power (chp) plants in December.
The combined cycle gas-fired schemes, all of which will serve industrial and process plants, are located in Manchester, Liverpool, Northfleet in Kent and South Ferriby in North Lincolnshire.

The four plants total 244 MW of chp capacity, the largest of which is 110 MW. This station will supply the heat and electricity needs of the Kimberly-Clark paper mill at Northfleet.

The DTI's announcement comes in the wake of the 4840 MW of non-chp gas-fired power stations that were given consent by Trade and Industry Secretary Stephen Byers last November.

Energy Minister Helen Liddell claimed that the latest consents "demonstrate the Government's continuing commitment to chp...and to reducing emissions of carbon to fulfil the promises we gave at Kyoto".
