The Alsop and Amec-designed futuristic new medical school at Queen Mary, University of London, is to be unveiled on Monday. The £45m building, in east London’s Whitechapel, will host the university's Institute of Cell and Molecular Science. It includes a single 3000 m2 open-plan research floor (the size of a football pitch) and spectacular suspended pods designed to evoke floating objects.

Along with cost manager Turner & Townsend, the project involved Gardiner & Theobald as project manager and Warrington Fire Research as fire engineering consultant. The contractor team comprised Crown House Technologies for the building services, Westbury Tubular Structures for the steel, Performance and Deck Roofing for the roofing, Seele for the curtain walling and Labflex for the laboratory furniture.
