In response to Mr Hamilton’s letter last week (Questionable costs, QS News, 28 October), as stated in the original article (The Cost Top 40, QS News, 21 October) the source of the rates was accepted tenders for jobs in the Midlands – none of them from Gleesons we should add.

They were intended as a snapshot of rates from current projects. Now any QS will know how much individual rates, even from different contractors tendering for same job, will vary.

It is also worth pointing out the effect of location on pricing. The current BCIS location factor for the West Midlands is 0.96 while the factor for Outer London is 1.13 and Inner London is 1.21.

The rates were presented as indicative and we would expect them to be applied with professional judgement, which Mr Hamilton clearly has in spades.
