Signs and Labels Limited has extended its range of safety products to the industry to comply with the Fire Precautions (Workplace Amend-ment) Regulations 1999. The range includes smoke detectors and alarms, fire extinquishers and accessories such as stands, fire blankets, fire safety signs, pocket guides and wallcharts.
In addition to providing equipment to detect and fight fires, the Signs and Labels' range offers facilities for emergency evacuation of personnel.
The Fire Safety range of equipment is one of many introductions to Signs and Labels' new Safetyshop catalogue. The 500 page catalogue contains over 21,000 product lines.

Pinnacle of sensitivity
The new Pinnacle from System Sensor Europe is an ultra-sensitive photoelectric point smoke detector that uses a laser instead of an IR LED as the light source. Part of the Series 200 plus analogue addressable family, Pinnacle is up to 100 times more sensitive than a standard photoelectric detector, allowing it to be set to a sensitivity of just 0.02% per foot, to give the earliest possible warning of fire.
As a point detector within an addressable fire system, the detector is fully supervised and can be mixed on a loop with all other types of smoke and heat detector. Two stage drift compensation ensures peak performance between service intervals and the sensitivity is adjustable from the panel in nine steps from 0.02% to 2.0% per foot.
Sophisticated onboard algorithms distinguish between transient dust-induced signals and real smoke, giving very early warning combined with high stability. Group polling can also be used to compare the pre-alarm signal from any one detector with the adjacent ones.

Kite marked
The housebuilders, Westbury, have chosen Kidde Fyrnetics to supply all its smoke and heat alarms on its housebuilding projects in South Wales.
Kidde Fyrnetics' smoke alarms are all BS kite marked and its heat alarms are independently tested to the current draft British Standards to reassure its customers. The slim profile and neat appearance of the smoke detectors also impressed the housebuilders. The Kidde smoke alarms have a 39mm depth (plus 20mm pattress where needed).
Westbury says the Kidde units needed no additional surface pattress for fixing as standard UK dry-lining boxes are simply accommodated on the alarm's base-plate. The company also supplies user-friendly manuals to installers, together with a 6 year alarm guarantee.
Westbury specified units that utilise the latest Duracell Ultra battery as back up for the mains powered smoke and heat alarms. Kidde also gives detailed information on selecting the right smoke and heat alarms on its web site www.smoke-alarms.co.uk.

Backwards compatible
Hochiki has a new generation of cost-effective conventional detectors. The range uses the company's proven 'flat-response' technology for the new photo-electric smoke detector which has already been extensively used in the field through the ASX and CDX ranges. It removes the need for ionisation smoke detectors and reduces environmental impact.
The new range has been tested to EN54 2000 and is suitable for use on both fire and security systems. It is an environmentally friendly photo-electric smoke detector with backwards compatibility enabling it to be fitted to existing CDX bases.
It has integral remote indicator drive on all base variants, has the same flexibility as the previous CDX range and includes head removal and relay bases.

Elegantly conventional
Apollo Fire Detectors Ltd has launched a new generation of conventional fire detectors. The range has been developed in close consultation with system installers, specifiers and end-users to resolve a number of industry requirements for simplicity, reliabilty and elegance.
All Apollo intelligent fire detector ranges feature a common, open protocol that makes systems based around them both forwards and backwards compatible. This makes system extension and upgrading much easier.
The XPlorer range of entry-level analogue fire detectors, the XP95 range and its Discovery range of intelligent fire detectors all comprise Apollo's patented XPERT addressing system which consists of a simple plastic card that fits into the base and can be read by the detecting head. With the address information held in the base, detecting heads can be swapped during maintenance without the need for reprogramming.

Ceiling mounted
Rokonet's Wireless Smoke Detector is a ceiling mount photoelectric smoke detector that adds fire warning capability to intruder alarm or access control systems.
The smoke detector operates on a frequency of 868MHz or 433MHz. It has a range of 400m line of sight, is ceiling mounted and gives no radiation emission. Other features include restore transmission, test mode, low battery transmission and status transmission every 65 minutes.
The wireless smoke detector uses one of 16 million codes without dipswitches, has a back tamper on the T32 model and uses two 9 volt alkaline batteries that give up to two-years battery life.

No frills panel
Bardic's conventional Zircon 1 fire detection control panel has been designed for commercial applications where up to four zones are required. It is said to be easy to install and commission, practical and simple to operate, and is neat and stylish in appearance.
Zircon 1 eliminates complex and rarely used functions. Up to a maximum of 20 smoke or heat detectors can be connected per zone and it has a facility to drive a repeater for common fire and fault plus individual zone fire and faults.
Other features include maximum safety low voltage circuitry and two double pole volt free auxiliary fire contacts. The panel also comes with a low cost, low weight battery that provides 24 hour standby power.

Smoke guard
Up to 12 units can be interlinked to protect a four or five bedroom home. They are configured so that no matter where the alarm is triggered, every alarm sounder will be immediately activated.
Control Guard’s features include an inbuilt battery back-up facility in the event of a mains failure or power cut, a missing battery indicator and a low battery indicator. A multifunctional LED verifies connection to the mains power supply and indicates the operational status of the installation, plus there is a ‘hush’ facility on selected models to overcome the risk of false alarms.
An additional mounting frame allows ease of wiring. The products come with a full one-year guarantee.

Ace of base
The detectors operate over a wide input voltage range from 8-30Vdc making them compatible with a security system’s nominal 12Vdc supply.
The relay bases are available in latching and non-latching versions to allow the smoke detector to interface with the two commonly used alternative technologies employed in security system control panels.
In the latching version, both detector and base permanently latch into alarm until the power is removed from the device. In the non-latching version, the relay changes state on alarm.
The base also resets by periodically removing and then re-applying power to itself. If the detector is still in an alarm condition, the relay automatically changes state back into alarm. The low profile bases measure 127mm in diameter and they are 29mm high. They have mounting holes that are compatible with most styles of European back box and conduit.
