Some PIRs have add-on features to help cut false alarms
Covering all angles

Cooper Security believes its Scantronic range of PIRs covers all the angles. It uses the latest technology, says Cooper, and “represents the future in signal processing and optical lens technology to lead the industry in detection accuracy, false alarm immunity and reliability”.

The range uses modern techniques which eliminate the many types of interference that affect reliability of traditional detectors to guarantee superior long-term performance and reduce false alarms.

Designed to fit with any décor, the range uses common housings which are stylish and compact, robust and discreet.

The 420 is a domestic digital PIR, with 3D cylindrical optics providing a 12m 90 degree multiple curtain coverage with creep zone, and True Motion Recognition.

It also boasts adjustment-free fast installation with remote walk test; selectable event counter, one or two motion events; fully sealed optics; and solid state relay for silent operation.

The long ranger

Long-range detectors don’t have

to be big and clunky, according to Bosch Security Systems. Bosch’s solution is the DS778, offering 200 feet of long-range coverage. When the aesthetics of an application are just as important as the intrusion protection, the DS778 is attractively packaged in a sleek, compact enclosure, giving the benefits of Bosch’s motion detection technology with a look that almost vanishes in any décor.

Using Bosch’s patented Motion Analyser II signal processing, the detector intelligently analyses signals to make smart alarm decisions. This detailed process enables it to distinguish between different signal sources.

The DS778 also includes a special high-efficiency LED, which can be seen throughout the entire coverage area up to 200 feet away, so you can easily and instantly assess the detector’s status from anywhere in the covered area.

Our Bench Testers’ assessment in February was: “With a number of mounting options available, it will no doubt be used for a variety of applications in larger premises. The measurement of background IR interference should lead to improved installation reliability. It is neat and unobtrusive.”

Tolerating pets

FM Electronics has extended its product range with the release of a new pet tolerant detector. The device is designed for use in any application where one cat or dog up to 25kg may be active.

It has the ability to ignore a pet’s activities but still provide effective detection in a 12m 90-degree area when required. This product can be used with any of the 4000 series control panels or the FM4040 Class 6 universal receiver interface. When used with the interface, the new detector can be added to any existing wired system with available zones, including systems requiring police response via an alarm receiving centre.

Aim for Prestige

The Prestige QD is part of Texecom’s latest series of innovative detectors combining sleek styling with cutting edge technology. It has interchangeable electronic modules that allow six different detector PCBs to be mounted within the same elegant housing.

The range consists of a PIR, quad, Clockwise detector, a twin dual element PIR, a dual technology detector and a Petwise pet immune detector.

Also part of the Prestige range, but within different matching housings, are the Prestige Compact IR, a miniature cost-effective PIR and the Prestige MR, a digital PIR with mirrored optics.

Variety of features

From Guardall comes the Apollo, with combined sealed optics, sneak lens, pulse count option and overall reliability. Other features include temperature compensation, and Surface Mount Device manufacture. It includes 12m, 15m and ceiling mount (360) variants. To complement the series there is a choice of mounting brackets for various applications and the option to add custom printing on the cover of the unit.

Following on from the million-selling Apollo series, the microcontroller-based M-2 is designed to retain the elegant and distinctive styling of the Guardall V-series. The choice of three coverage options (volumetric, corridor and curtain), all with four selectable levels of sensitivity (pulse count) provide the M-2 with high flexibility for a wide range of applications.

The Guardall V12 was the first with the “Dual-Hex” verification technology which claims virtually no false alarms while ensuring the highest level of detection capability. With a choice of 15m volumetric, 10m curtain or 20m corridor coverage, this is said to be one of the most flexible and reliable PIRs on the market.

Two channels for anti-masking

Rokonet says its iWISE AM is the most advanced PIR for high-risk applications, using two active infrared channels for anti-masking. One active IR channel utilises special prisms located between the LEDs to detect any object obstructing the detector’s field-of-view.

The second active IR channel is located behind the lens to protect against spraying or covering the lens – even with lacqueur. The iWISE AM is said to provide the ultimate catch performance and false alarm immunity, enabled by digital signal processing, patented True Temperature Compensation and an improved lens design.

Short-range applications

From Vision Fire and Security come two PIR units designed for use in short-range applications to its Adpro product range.

The PRO18W and PRO45 complement the existing long-range detectors and provide a comprehensive, cost-effective and high performance solution for surveillance-based protection.

The PRO18W offers a wide-angle field view, suited to monitoring the front of a building with continuous detection coverage from 1m in

front of the mounting pole to a

distance of 18m.

The PRO45 offers a defined narrow sensing curtain and protects perimeters with continuous detection coverage from 1m in front of the mounting pole to a distance of 45m.

The Adpro PIRs can be mounted at heights of up to 4.5m. They feature Adaptive Threshold Decoding, which alters the sensitivity levels to compensate for changes in the prevailing environmental conditions, maximising detection performance and reducing the incidence of false alarms.

Independent detectors

Optex Europe’s Sequad sequential confirmation detector contains two independent PIR detectors inside one housing. They provide two non-overlapping coverage patterns with two independent alarm outputs, giving the unit the ability to create reliable sequentially confirmed activations.

Installation is said to be easy because the Sequad only requires one standard eight-core cable, thus making upgrading easier as installers only need to remove existing detectors and re-wire Sequad detectors to existing cabling.

There are two products in the Sequad range. Both provide wide-angle 85-degree coverage. The SQ-40 covers 12 x 12m and the SQ-60 18 x 18m. Both units incorporate Optex patented quad zone logic, advanced temperature compensation and noise reduction processing.

‘BlueWave’ technology gives flexibility

The KX15DQ is a digital quad with the latest in PIR detection from Pyronix. It combines innovative features with the company’s tried and tested technologies offering optimum reliability.

The KX15DQ has on-board selectable resistor values of 5K6, 4K7, 2K2 and 1K catering for most control panels on the market, completely eliminating the need for separate resistors. When using the KX15DQ in-built EOL resistors, installation is kept to a minimum, so no awkward wiring or checking resistor colour codes. Simply move the header links supplied to the resistor values required.

This detector even has the flexibility to still be wired as conventional normally closed loops.

The distance between the pyro-electric sensor and the lens is identical for each detection zone lens. This eliminates distortion and provides “excellent” focused zones. By having a solid state relay that can be selected as normally open or normally closed, the KX15DQ is the natural choice for those seeking a high quality PIR for applications such as switching CCTV cameras. Both wall and ceiling tamper proof brackets are supplied.

Common housing

GardTec’s eurosec PIRs share a common housing as well as white light protection, selectable pulse count and automatic temperature compensation. The detectors are also available in PIR, dual technology and quad versions.

Other PIR ranges from Gard-Tec include Gardscan M and Q. Gardscan units, like eurosec, benefits from advanced frequency analysis and filter techniques to optimise their performance.

GardTec uses custom integrated circuitry on its PIRs which makes the engineer set-up time simple and keeps installation time to a minimum.
