Ed Miliband heads up new ministry to tackle energy policy and climate change while Ian Pearson becomes construction minister

Gordon Brown’s reshuffle has seen the appointment of Ed Miliband as the secretary of state for the newly-created Department for Energy and Climate Change.

Miliband said: “The new department reflects the fact that energy policy and climate change are directly linked.

“My job is to make sure our policy on climate change is fair for ordinary families and our policy on energy is sustainable for future generations.”

Elsewhere, yet another new construction minister was appointed as Ian Pearson took over the reins from Baroness Vadera, who has moved to the Cabinet Office.

In a spectacular return to the cabinet, Peter Mandelson heads up Pearson’s ministry as business secretary.

Margaret Beckett is the new housing minister. She replaces Caroline Flint, who moves to the Foreign Office.
