The chairman of Dearle & Henderson Alan Yates has died aged 55. He died suddenly on 10 April of an undiagnosed heart condition.

Yates oversaw the firm's transition from private partnership to private limited company in 1992.

Dearle & Henderson described Yates as "a formidable leader". The firm said: "During his 27-year tenure, Alan engineered the transition of Dearle & Henderson from a traditional quantity surveying practice to the multi-disciplinary consultancy company it is today. Alan's sharp intellect, coupled with a wicked sense of humour, has made him a distinctive figure in the property and construction sector."

Yates joined the company in 1978, became an associate partner in 1982 and equity partner in the then partnership of Dearle & Henderson in 1986. Following the incorporation to a private limited company in 1992 he was appointed executive chairman and marketing director of the company. In 1998 he was appointed chairman and chief executive, the latter being a post he had held until recently.

Yates leaves behind his wife Susan and twin sons, Richard and Jonathan.
