Ambitious 'Elephants of the Asia Forest' scheme creates a more natural environment at Chester Zoo

Davis Langdon has completed work on a new home for the elephants at Chester Zoo. Architect Butress Fuller Allsop Williams designed the £3m Elephants of the Asia Forest scheme, which aims to move away from traditional animal cages and recreate a rainforest environment. It features real and artificial trees and the air is controlled to ensure a high level of humidity. Davis Langdon said the brief was "highly ambitious", aiming to strike a balance between animal welfare, visitor experience, health and safety and ease of access for zookeepers.
