Moves to simplify the Data Protection Act are expected to boost housing associations' efforts to tackle antisocial behaviour.
Guidance was unveiled last week to advise police authorities of their responsibilities to share information under the act. Some associations have previously complained of being left out of the loop by the police, despite sometimes having a legitimate claim to access tenants' records.
Under the act, police can exchange knowledge if it is used to prevent crime. However, some UK associations have reported problems obtaining information.
Ian Simpson, assistant director of housing management services at Northern Counties Housing Association, said: "[This] is very much welcomed. It clarifies responsibilities and should lead to a more consistent approach where antisocial behaviour is involved."
