A CCTV transmission system with integrated digital recorder has been catching out criminals who operate under cover of darkness.

Vista SmartDisc is being used by the team at ESS-Security's monitoring centre in Leeds. ne of ESS's customers, camping and outdoor chain, Barretts of Feckenham, had success with the system shortly after it was installed when the cameras picked up a gang while it was rolling up the display tents and taking them away.

Said MD of ESS, Bill Gray: "They thought they were safe - it was pitch black". But unbeknown to the thieves the cameras have image intensifiers and the ESS team was watching their every move.

Police were notified of a crime in progress and responded in force resulting in six arrests.

Said Gray: "Most people think that cameras are only linked to video recorders and so they feel safe but all of ours are monitored".
