One of the biggest ever claims in the history of the construction industry has hit two firms forming part of Currie & Brown Group.

The £54m lawsuit relates to an incinerator in Crymlyn Burrows near Neath in Wales for which Currie & Brown was providing the technical advice. The £32m plant opened in 2002 but was shut down the following year over environmental breaches and was damaged by fire not long after that.

Neath Port Talbot council wants £54m from defendants Currie & Brown Project Management and Currie & Brown Consulting, two dormant companies dropped when the parent became a limited company.

A legal source told Building magazine: 'That sum is a big claim in anyone's books - even large consultants only tend to carry professional indemnity insurance of £10-20m. It's unusual for consultants to face a claim of this size.'
