The London borough of Merton is set to appoint contractors and consultants based on their answers to a voluntary environmental questionnaire on their website.

The questionnaire will enable council departments to assess a consultant’s and contractor’s green credentials and environmental management know-how.

Information from the questionnaire is available for use by any public and private sector organisations when shortlisting contractors, suppliers and consultants who apply to work for them.

The questionnaire provides information about the health and safety part of the potential supplier’s application and highlights their environmental capability. It also raises awareness within industry of environmental issues such as climate change, waste and local nuisance.

The questionnaire is supported by M & E Sustainability, a major joint programme run by the Electrical Contractors’ Association and the Heating and Ventilating Contractors’ Association.

The questionnaire, part of the council’s Contractors’ Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS), can be found at www.chas.gov.uk.

CHAS, one of the largest schemes of its type in Europe, notes the council, continues to grow and has more than 300 clients and 18,000 registered contractors and consultants.
